We have part time, and possibly full time, positions available for undergraduate students. If you are interested in working with us on genome sequencing, culture collection curation, traits analysis, or bioinformatics, please email Kristen with your resume. We look forward to hearing from you!
Here is a description of the types of projects available at this time:
- We have a large culture collection of bacteria that we always need help curating. This involves organizational skills, sterile technique, and use of PCR, gel electrophoresis, and sequence analysis for genotyping.
- We are sequencing the genomes of many isolates using the MinION platform. This involves extracting genomic DNA, performing quality control and quantification of gDNA, constructing sequence libraries, and running the MinION sequencer.
- Traits analysis of isolates is conducted to investigate the physiology of microbial adaptation. These may include lab-based assays like growth curves, enzyme assays, or other. We are also looking for a student to help set up a high throughput continuous culturing setup.
- Students can assist in our comparative genomics projects in assembling and annotating new genome sequences. There is also the possibility of conducting comparative genomics analysis.
